• In 1987 Ruud Gullit became the world's most expensive player when he moved from PSV to Milan for £6.5 million.
• In the same year, Gullit became only the third player - after Paolo Rossi and Michel Platini - to be voted both World and European footballer of the year in the same season. He dedicated this to jailed African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela.
• In 1988 Gullit became the first Dutch captain to lift a major international trophy when he led an outstanding side to victory in the 1988 European Championships.
• After helping Milan win the Italian Championship in 1988 Gullit was instrumental in the club's European Cup success the following year, scoring twice in th 4-0 final win over Steaua Beacharest. In all he won three Serie A titles with Milan and two European Cups.
• When Chelsea beat Middlesborough 2-0 to win the FA Cup in 1997, Ruud Gullit became the first non-british manager ever to win a major trophy with an English club.
